Lairk

A drow priestess and scout leader encountered in the Xen’Drik jungle. She speaks calmly, coldly, and very close — and where her people would normally meet outsiders with arrows, she met the party with a question.

Description

Pale-skinned in the jungle’s filtered light, with eyes that gleam faintly even at midday. Carries herself with the authority of a priestess, though her phrasing is that of a scout — “the land does not know them”, “those who have not pledged”. She moves with the easy assurance of someone who has walked these ruins her entire life.

The Trial of the Stones

When the party first met Lairk and her warriors at the close of Session 11, weapons were lowered but not sheathed. She was deciding whether the party was a threat or a solution. Session 12 opened with her request:

“My people are wary of outsiders. These new disturbances here have sowed distrust. If your intentions are true, I request a show of good faith.”

She led the party to a small clearing where flat runed stones lay arranged in a circle. Her instruction was simple:

“Please, stand on these stones. The land will interpret what it will.”

The stones lightly vibrated under the party’s feet — a slow pulse, almost a question. Lairk’s response:

“You listen to the ground. That is rare among outsiders.”

Trust extended, conditionally.

The Riddle of the Colossus

Lairk led the party to a clearing where the Slanted Circle had chained a Chainbound Colossus between four ancient columns, using ley sigils to bind it as a guardian. She did not understand the wickedness of the act and refused to interfere directly:

“The intruders that came before brought this creature here with them. What wickedness is this? It is as if he stands guard. I must return to the scouting party. This is your riddle to solve.”

When she returned and found the Colossus gone — freed, not killed — her composure shifted into something close to respect. She said only: “What happened here?” And after the party explained: “Quickly. Follow us. We have found who you pursue. Blades have been drawn.”

In the Battle

Lairk fought alongside the party at the resonator field, marshalling her warriors against the Circle’s main force while directing the party to break through the crystal storm and expose the regulator:

“We need to break through the crystal field and expose that resonator!”

Her people held the line through the worst of it. Whether they would have won that battle without the party’s intervention is unclear. What is clear: she had been waiting for an outside force she could trust enough to commit her people to open warfare against the Circle.

What She Represents

Lairk is the first Xen’Drik Drow to extend conditional trust to surface outsiders in living memory. Her authority within the wider Xendrik Drow and her willingness to align with non-pledged outsiders are both unusual. The party’s mercy with the Colossus appears to have been the proof she required.

If the campaign returns to Xen’Drik for the closing of the Maw, Lairk is likely the bridge to that alliance.
